Dirty "Fourty" of 14F Flotille of Aéronavale after having fired all its 20mm bullets from the four Mk 12 cannons either on ground target but rather on towed targets behind some old Vautour or obsolete fighter. French F-8F (FN) Crusaders were exclusively used for Fleet Air Defence. Be sure that the plane was clean as a brand new one for next firing sortie of the day... Flying sailors are as their chaps on ships: all must be neat, clean and bright. I remember a debriefing with all pilots, except the C/O, having black marks let on faces by oxygen masks. At the end, with great serious, the Flotille leader asked to each to wash his mask because he disagreed with dirty faces, even after a busy flight !!!
