Being forced to take the 50 Mirage 5Js destined to Israel after a long embargo period was not of the taste of everyone in AdlA. This Mirage deprived of Cyrano radar could not be efficiently used in all-weather conditions and for 13th Fighter Wing, which was specialised in the all-weather and night interception rôle since its débuts with F-86K then with the Mirage III C using a rocket for scramble interception and operating two Mirage III E Squadrons at this period of 1972, it was curious to add a third one fitted with so a rusic machine which, to be used by France, had to receive a new avionic at AdlA standards. Finally, with experience, it was not a bad affair for 13th FW to dispose of a bisonic attacker for secondary tasks quite immediately usable for high performance goun-guided interception with IR air-air missiles and 30mm guns. The Jaguars having to be introduced later had much more fire power but no high speed capabilities nor radar at all...
