First flight of EC 3/13 " Auvergne " Squadron had its origins as SPA 85. I knew the pilot who designed this Joker or Jester during WWI which also was called " La Folie " or " Le Fou " by pilots because all these english or french names were associated to cards and this because their C/0 was as excited to fight against Germans than play cards with his pilots. He also spoke me about particular markings over upper wings of French fighters. This was due to the general commanding the Aviation troops who flew well above his fighting aircraft and so, after the battle, could give some lessons to pilots... They did not appreciated, having enough to do with ennemy and the markings disappeared...
