| N°5, the Phantom of
the Crusaders!!!, see previous picture's caption, was one
of the 42 naval fighters received by French Aéronavale.
They all had US Navy serials ranging from 151732 to 773
which were never carried. It's interesting to know that
France got an extra Crusader, a F-8A, for ground
instruction at the Mechanics School of Rochefort. The
unique prototype of a F-8E (FN) 147036, first flown on
February 27, 1964, was got from conversion of an F-8E
which was written-off two months later on April 11, and
first production machine did first flight on June 26. |
